Totally Completely Absolutely Beginning of operating Linux

So, hello, this may be the wrong way, the wrong place, even the wrong OS;

I havecrashed winXP, and loaded Mandriva One 2009 from image disk.And I'm lost.Every time I go to a forum, there are questions and answers 50% in Linuxese, which I don't know.Even when I see "enter /dev into terminal" I CANT FIND A TERMINAL.Is there a file 'tree ?

Can anyone tell an ex-windows user anything, step-by step, like driving a car.Step One. Put your hand on the door handle, press button with thumb, pull door towards you while not releasing thumb,  then let go of door,put one leg into car. .Should I change to Ubuntu or Antelope Z3?,  or maybe bail out of Linux.I like the democratic nature of Linux.

Step 1: Ask better questions :)

You didn't exactly say what you're trying to do. If you've installed Mandriva then you should have a working system - not exactly lost. If you're trying to perform a particular task and can't find how to do it, you need to say what you're attempting.
